What are the important softwares required in the field of robotics?

I want to do my masters in robotics.. please suggest a few softwares I should know before i start my MS next year.... I am from a mechanical background but know java, c/c++, matlab.. and i feel that robotics requires a lot of programming skills so i want to learn those before I go(at least learn the basics in those languages)
