When a Christian tells you to 'take a pew' how do you know whether to take it literally or not?

I shy away from anyone who talks like that. It may start with 'take a pew' or 'sit thee doon, sit thee doon' but before you know it you will be quaffing foaming tankards of nut brown ale with them and wassailing till dawn, whatever that means.
