Can i change my monitor's refresh rate from 60 to 120 hz?

i have a 17 inches lcd monitor........with a refresh rate of 60hz...i want to play games with real d 3d glasses...i have those glasses and a compatible software to make the game to come in 3d.....but when i use it......it is telling "you need a 120hz compatible 3d display for playing these games".....is there any way to change the refresh rate to 120 hz from 60hz without spending money?....or using softwares
