Magic the Gathering, Doom Blade's ability, can it be wasted?

In this case the game would be rewound until the point before the illegal target was declared and you would have to choose a legal target. Since you played the spell already it is too late to take it back but not too late to rechoose targets. Your friend is wrong in that you cannot just play a spell without having a legal target in play.
