Was he serious or was i misreading ?

I work in a coffee shop. this guy would come in and tell me i was beautiful, and would say he wanted to run off to a tropical island with me. i never encouraged this, he just started saying it one day. he invited me to a function in the summer, and asked if i would go, i said yes, but he didnt think i was serious. before he left the shop, he said he would wear me down one day and we'd go out..he hasn't been back since. did i scare him off, or does he feel like an idiot for what he's been saying, or was he just not serious in the first place ?
