Im not sure whether this guy likes me or not? :(?

I know a guy who is a childhood friend but i haven't seen him in a long time. I saw him recently and he seemed like he was interested in me but he had a gf. He broke up with his gf and now ive been hearing that he has a crush on another girl and might ask her out. I don't understand?? Was i misreading the signals? Every time i see him he always stares and smiles at me. Im so confused!!
