1996 toyota tercel misreading gas gage?

I got a 1996 Toyota Tercel. A few days ago i had like an eighth of a tank and today i started it up and had a half a tank i know that its false what do i do to fix this prob. Would it help if i disconnected the battery to reset everything? Someone please help me. Thanks
